Phantom of Fear City

1-12

This is one of my favorite series, with one of the strangest origins ever. My old friend Richard Howell, artist on VISION & THE SCARLET WITCH, started a three-title line stemming from his love of the old Dark Shadows TV serial. Each of the titles took place in the same small Connecticut town, informally known as "Fear City." The Phantom was supposed to be a teenager haunting a shopping mall, but this didn't speak to me so Richard let me come up with this - a variation on the Flying Dutchman legend.

The book has plenty of action but is primarily a novel of characters. Over twelve issues I played out one of the most complex and satisfying plots I've ever concocted, involving love, death, and redemption.

The art was a mishmash, but a mishmash of good people. George Pérez inked all the covers. The early issues' cover pencils and insides were done by Matt Haley, just starting out - the last issues were by John Heebink - and in the middle came Nick Choles, a wonderful artist who gave up comics to pursue painting.

To advertise the fact that all of his titles took place in the same town, Richard had me write several 3-page "extras" which appeared in his other titles. These are not essential to the series but add a little texture.

NOTES:

4: Guest-stars Coyote™, Scorpio Rose™, and the Djinn™.

12: The publisher only had enough money for a certain number of pages and my climactic story needed more (they usually do <g>), so I wrote the extra pages for free. Like I said, Richard's a friend.
